2010 GMC Terrain VS Ford Edge

FORD EDGE OVERVIEW

The 2009 Ford Edge is a 5-passenger crossover SUV that is powered by a 265 hp V6 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. FWD is standard; AWD available. Car and Driver reviewers note that “the ride is fairly harsh, with noticeable road noise” (June 2, 2009).

On the interior the IP is encased in hard plastic surfaces with aluminum-look trim. Gauges are easy to read and the controls on the center stack are large and easy to use. There is a feeling of roominess in the cabin, but the seats feel hard and comfort on a long trip is questionable.

Edge is available in four models: SE, SEL, Limited and Sport and is an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Edge also earned a 5-star/4- star frontal driver/passenger crash rating and a 5-star/5-star side crash rating from NHTSA.

While the Edge is 3" wider and provides a little more shoulder and hip room, it is still a 5-passenger crossover
that does not provide as much leg room as Terrain. And, Edge does not offer some of the convenience features such as the IP-mounted power child safety locks, heated outside rearview mirrors, Rearview Camera System or Remote Start. Finally, Edge has a higher “starting at” MSRP and only offers one engine that doesn’t come close to the 32 mpg highway fuel economy that is provided by Terrain’s 2.4L DI engine.

TERRAIN PERFORMANCE VS. EDGE

32 mpg fuel economy. Edge does not offer a 4-cylinder engine. Terrain’s 4-cylinder engine provides segmentleading fuel economy. Even with the V6 engine, Terrain still comes out ahead of Edge with its 17 city/25 highway fuel economy vs. 17 city/24 highway for Edge.

Greater range. Terrain provides a driving range of up to 600 miles with its 2.4L engine and over 500 miles with the 3.0L engine. Edge only has a driving range of 456 miles with its 3.5L V6. End result: Edge drivers have to stop for fuel more often than Terrain drivers.

Direct Injection. The next advance in fuel injection, direct injection enhances both performance and fuel economy. Terrain has it in both of its engines; Edge doesn’t.

Hill Hold. When on a hill, Terrain senses the incline and applies the brakes to hold the vehicle in position when the brake is released, giving time (about 4 seconds) to move to the accelerator. Once the sensors indicate acceleration, either by torque of the engine or by throttle position, the brakes are released. Edge does not offer this feature.

Longer wheelbase. Terrain’s segment-leading 112.5" wheelbase provides a smoother ride. Coupled with a new, wider track, Terrain has a stable platform which enhances stability and handling.

TERRAIN COMFORT & CONVENIENCE VS. EDGE

Standard Rearview Camera System. Another strong Terrain selling feature is the standard rearview camera with the display integrated in the inside rearview mirror to clearly show what’s behind the vehicle. The closest Edge can come is a Reverse Sensing System that provides audible warnings. Terrain offers a similar system in addition to its rearview camera.

Low and away IP. Terrain’s instrument panel is low and away, providing a more spacious and open environment. Edge’s IP is higher and closer to the driver.

More rear-seat leg room. With the Multi-Flex seat, Terrain’s rear seat can slide back to provide the most rear leg room in the segment.

Reclining rear seatbacks. Terrain’s rear seatbacks have three positions (straight, 5-degree recline, 10-degree recline) as well as fold down for cargo carrying needs. Edge seats fold fl at and recline.

Programmable power liftgate. Terrain offers a programmable power liftgate, a luxury not available even on the most expensive Edge.

IP-mounted child safety locks. With Terrain, the rear child security locks lock and unlock with a touch of a convenient button on the instrument panel. With Edge, you have to get out and manually lock or unlock them on the rear doors.

TERRAIN FUNCTIONALITY VS. EDGE

Multi-Flex rear seat. Terrain’s Multi-Flex rear seat slides back for more rear leg room, forward for more cargo behind the rear seat. The split-folding seatback also allows long objects to be carried inside Terrain while still accommodating up to two rear-seat passengers. Edge offers easy-fold, split seatbacks, but does not have the advantage of 8" fore/aft travel for personal comfort and convenience.

Cargo hooks and tie-downs. Standard in Terrain; not available in Edge.

Larger console storage. The lower compartment underneath Terrain’s front center armrest is large enough to hold a full-size laptop computer. Edge’s has a moveable divider, but is not nearly as accommodating.

TERRAIN TECHNOLOGY VS. EDGE

Standard USB port. For connecting iPods and other USB devices, this is standard on Terrain. To get a USB port on
Edge you must get SYNC.

More standard speakers. Six for Terrain, four for Edge.

Standard XM Radio. XM standard in every new Terrain. In Edge, satellite radio is limited to SEL and above.

Factory-installed rear DVD. Terrain’s rear seatbackmounted system comes directly from the factory. The best Edge can offer is a dealer-installed accessory system mounted in the front-seat headrests.

Multi-play rear DVD. Another Terrain rear DVD advantage: Video games can be played on one monitor while a DVD movie is playing on the other.

Standard OnStar. Every new Terrain owner gets the advantage of OnStar including Automatic Crash Response, Vehicle Diagnostics, Crisis Assist, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Roadside Assistance and Remote Horn and Lights. Edge features the SYNC system that does not have the wide range of functionality available with OnStar. Emergency services and vehicle diagnostics are available options, but none of the other OnStar type services are available.

Remote Start. Terrain’s available new smart system operates more than 325' from the vehicle. Edge offers remote start as an LPO.

Driver Information Center. This critical source of vehicle monitoring and information is standard on Terrain. Driver information is limited on the Edge.

TERRAIN SAFETY & SECURITY VS. EDGE

Daytime Running Lamps. An important safety feature that helps other drivers see you better. Standard on Terrain; not available on Edge.

OnStar with Automatic Crash Response. The peace of mind of OnStar is standard on Terrain; not available on Edge.
